Countries which seemed far away behind an “iron curtain” soon will join the European Union. And there is a lot of nature and unknown history to discover.

Therefor in 2003 there were 159 cyclists from 16 countries from all over the world but mainly from Poland and Lithuania joining for a special cycle tour: To ride a piece of the international cycle route EuroVelo No. 11 Athens- North Cape. This book is made in Lithuania, therefor are less information on Poland.

We discoved this route – and we offer you to join us on your own trip.

The route in Poland

This booklet is based on our experience, on the plans of the Polish Country lovers’ society (PTTK), which is responsible on this route in Poland. Sometimes we changed the route, because the proposed route is not very convenient for cycling, because they were sandy hinking trails (usually PTTK is responsible on hiking trail signing).
Generally, Polish roads are known to be bad: main road are tiny and crowded. But there are also tiny second scale asphalt roads (perfect for cycing), gravel roads and forest roads.

The roads in Lithuania

Streets can be categorized into four different levels:

Highways and dual carriageways, main connecting routes .
These ones are marked with an “A”. their drawback is mainly too intensive traffic. On the highways (in Lithuania) nowadays going by bike is officially forbidden but not everyone seems to care about it.

Asphalted streets of any kind one level lower than main connecting streets.
“Asphalt side streets are the paradise for cyclists.” (Dirk Jung, VeloViaBaltica). They are in all the three states of different coarse asphalt usually without strong traffic and offers you good conditions of cycling. You will find them on the map in red colour.

Non-asphalted gravel roads.
Most often they are not recommended to take. They quality is low, many bumps and dust. You and your bike (especially the bearings) will be stressed in a strong way.
Furthermore, cars in summer time produce clouds of dust when passing these roads.
Nevertheless, you will not be able to avoid them completely.

Paths trough the forest
They are better than gravel roads but sometimes more difficult to find. You will need relatively good maps.
Please pay attention to the weather when choosing the ways. In case of rain gravel roads are easier to cycle than forest paths.
You will find heavy traffic only near bigger cities and their narrow surroundings as well as on main connecting routes. Attention: Be careful on small streets with cars that like to speed up but do not care at all about bikers.
Tip: Put a small mirror on your handlebars.

Principles of route planning

We avoid the main, crowded roads and therefor of cause cycle on few parts on gravel and forest roads, especially because they are on very nice routes.

We recommend you to leave you more time. Go on small roads and feel the spirit and the nature!

In Poland: The hiking trails – as known – are dotted on the maps and listed.

In Lithuania: Local cycling and hiking trails are dotted (not sign posted)

The Route in Lithuania (LT1)

https://cycling.waymarkedtrails.org/#route?id=232048&map=9!54.3512!24.4269

[LT1] Warsaw-Vilnius by bicycle On this route you will see: The National Parks in the Lithuanian and Polish border regions, and town full of history Main sights Warsaw Lomza Brziabianski NP Augustow Suwalki Wigry NP Druskininkai Dzukijos NP Pivasiunai Aukstadvario RP Trakai Vilnius Publications: Booklet “BaltiCCycle Warszawa-Vilnius” Countries which seemed far away behind an “iron curtain” soon will join the European Union.

[:en]BaltiCCycle Routes in Lithuanai, Latvia, Estonia[:de]BaltiCCycle.eu Fahrradrouten in Litauen, Lettland, Estland[:
[:en]EuroVelo 11 -
