We don&#8217;t really want to go to Klaipeda or Daugvapils.<\/div>\n<div>The cycle routes go more east or west than just south. Is there a reason for this? Are the roads going south not so good?<\/div>\n<div>This region is pretty flat, the Lithuanian side is more marked by old industrial cities and agriculture.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s simply not very attractive for tourism. Transportation of bicycles is not operated<br \/>\nin commuter buses, so it is possible in special cases only by successful<br \/>\nagreement with the bus driver.<\/p>\n<h2>Roads<\/h2>\n<p>The routes are basically headingalonggravelroads withlow traffic intensity.<br \/>\nChangeable qualityof road is possible in several routes and separate sections of<br \/>\nroads, for example, in especially dry summer the cyclists may beunpleasantly<br \/>\nsurprised by the hated\u201cladder\u201d and dust caused by passing drivers.<br \/>\nBe careful and ride reasonably along the asphalted sections \u2013 the closer to the<br \/>\ncity, the more intensive the traffic is!Use reflecting elements for your clothing and<br \/>\nbicycle for safety purposes; moving in the dark time of the day, use torches.<br \/>\nBicycle traffic infrastructure is slowly developing in cities,the main streets can be<br \/>\npassed throughsafe bicycleroads, thus visiting also the tourism objects ofthe city.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Routes<\/span><\/h2>\n<div>01<br \/>\nCastles in the vicinity of Bauska<br \/>\n~ 30 km<br \/>\nBauska \u2013 Me\u017eotne \u2013 Pilsrund\u0101le \u2013 Bauska<br \/>\nCycling route connects three castles located in the vicinity of Bauska and heads in<br \/>\nthe territory of Bauska nature park along River Lielupe. Riding along this route<br \/>\nshould be performed between May and October, since the pontoon bridge over<br \/>\nRiver Lielupe by Me\u017eotne Castle is winterized; therefore \u2013 if you come in early spring<br \/>\nor late fall, please, contact with Me\u017eotne Castle to clarify, if the small bridge is<br \/>\navailable. The route is satiated with sightseeing objects therefore the ride should be<br \/>\nplanned as a full day trip.<br \/>\nBauska castle<br \/>\nRund\u0101le castle<br \/>\nThe older part of Bauska castle is a fortress of Livonian Order built in the 15th<br \/>\ncentury for use of firearms, but the newer part is residence \u2013 type castle fortified by<br \/>\nbastions, protecting walls and ground bulwarks, built at the end of the 16th century.<br \/>\nCastle is located on a strip of land between the rivers of M\u016bsa and M\u0113mele. Order \u2013<br \/>\ncastle has remained as romantic ruins till nowadays, but the residence section has<br \/>\nbeen refurbished and it hosts The Museum of Bauska castle. www.bauskaspils.lv<br \/>\nRund\u0101le castle is one of the most excellent architecture and art monument<br \/>\nof baroque and rococo in Latvia. The castle was built from 1736 to 1740 as the<br \/>\nsummer residence for Kurzeme duke Ernst Johann Biron, the favourite of the<br \/>\nEmpress of Russia Anna Ioannovna. Renovation of the\u201cFrench garden\u201ddesigned by<br \/>\nF.B. The roadis winding along M\u0113mele from Bauska to Skaistkalne, but presen\u00adce<br \/>\nof the river behind the corn fields and meadows can be just sensed. Are the roads going south not so good?<\/div>\n<div>This region is pretty flat, the Lithuanian side is more marked by old industrial cities and agriculture.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s simply not very attractive for tourism. Transportation of bicycles is not operated<br \/>\nin commuter buses, so it is possible in special cases only by successful<br \/>\nagreement with the bus driver.<\/p>\n<h2>Roads<\/h2>\n<p>The routes are basically headingalonggravelroads withlow traffic intensity.<br \/>\nChangeable qualityof road is possible in several routes and separate sections of<br \/>\nroads, for example, in especially dry summer the cyclists may beunpleasantly<br \/>\nsurprised by the hated\u201cladder\u201d and dust caused by passing drivers.<br \/>\nBe careful and ride reasonably along the asphalted sections \u2013 the closer to the<br \/>\ncity, the more intensive the traffic is!Use reflecting elements for your clothing and<br \/>\nbicycle for safety purposes; moving in the dark time of the day, use torches.<br \/>\nBicycle traffic infrastructure is slowly developing in cities,the main streets can be<br \/>\npassed throughsafe bicycleroads, thus visiting also the tourism objects ofthe city.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Routes<\/span><\/h2>\n<div>01<br \/>\nCastles in the vicinity of Bauska<br \/>\n~ 30 km<br \/>\nBauska \u2013 Me\u017eotne \u2013 Pilsrund\u0101le \u2013 Bauska<br \/>\nCycling route connects three castles located in the vicinity of Bauska and heads in<br \/>\nthe territory of Bauska nature park along River Lielupe. Riding along this route<br \/>\nshould be performed between May and October, since the pontoon bridge over<br \/>\nRiver Lielupe by Me\u017eotne Castle is winterized; therefore \u2013 if you come in early spring<br \/>\nor late fall, please, contact with Me\u017eotne Castle to clarify, if the small bridge is<br \/>\navailable. The route is satiated with sightseeing objects therefore the ride should be<br \/>\nplanned as a full day trip.<br \/>\nBauska castle<br \/>\nRund\u0101le castle<br \/>\nThe older part of Bauska castle is a fortress of Livonian Order built in the 15th<br \/>\ncentury for use of firearms, but the newer part is residence \u2013 type castle fortified by<br \/>\nbastions, protecting walls and ground bulwarks, built at the end of the 16th century.<br \/>\nCastle is located on a strip of land between the rivers of M\u016bsa and M\u0113mele. Order \u2013<br \/>\ncastle has remained as romantic ruins till nowadays, but the residence section has<br \/>\nbeen refurbished and it hosts The Museum of Bauska castle. www.bauskaspils.lv<br \/>\nRund\u0101le castle is one of the most excellent architecture and art monument<br \/>\nof baroque and rococo in Latvia. The castle was built from 1736 to 1740 as the<br \/>\nsummer residence for Kurzeme duke Ernst Johann Biron, the favourite of the<br \/>\nEmpress of Russia Anna Ioannovna. Renovation of the\u201cFrench garden\u201ddesigned by<br \/>\nF.B. Hotel with<br \/>\n19th century furniture, restaurant and conference rooms are established in the<br \/>\ncastle. www.mezotnespils.lv<\/div>\n<h2>02 Rich Zemgale<\/h2>\n<div>~ 80 km<br \/>\nBauska \u2013 Brunava \u2013 Jaunsaule \u2013 Skaistkalne \u2013 Ozolaine \u2013<br \/>\nVecsaule \u2013 Bauska<br \/>\nThis route is rich in sightseeing objects, it allows familiarizing Zemgale and its re\u00adsi\u00ad<br \/>\ndents. The roadis winding along M\u0113mele from Bauska to Skaistkalne, but presen\u00adce<br \/>\nof the river behind the corn fields and meadows can be just sensed. This route is<br \/>\nmore suitable for two day trips to have some time for closer familiarization with<br \/>\nsightseeing objects and conversations with the local people. Skaistkalne is located in<br \/>\nborderland therefore tourists here must hold passports or identification cards.<br \/>\nSkaistkalne Catholic church<br \/>\n\u201cAusek\u013cu dzirnavas\u201d<br \/>\nSkaistkalne \u2013 beautiful place in the very borderland of Lithuania, on the bank<br \/>\nof scenic M\u0113mele. The mightiest Catholic Church in Zemgale is located here, as<br \/>\nwell as the Church of the Holiest Virgin Mary\u2019s Assumption into heaven, built by<br \/>\nthe Jesuit Order in 1692; in addition the Order arranged the building in unusual<br \/>\nbaroque luxury, uncommon for Latvia at that time. This is the most important<br \/>\ncenter of Catholic faith in Zemgale and Latvia.<br \/>\nVisiting of Latvian country yard with collection of ancient tools is possible in<br \/>\nthe open-air museum \u201cAusek\u013cu dzirnavas\u201d, as well as trying of skills in different<br \/>\nfarming works and watching of the ancient machinery in operation. Sowing and<br \/>\nharvesting celebration with demonstrations of ancient farming works involving<br \/>\nvisitors takes place in the museum every spring and fall. www.ausekludzirnavas.lv<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h3>03 The memorial sites of K\u0101rlis Ulmanis<\/h3>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>35\u201338 km<br \/>\nDobele \u2013 Milti\u0146i \u2013 \u0160\u0137ibe \u2013 B\u0113rze \u2013 Lejasstrazdi \u2013 Dobele<br \/>\nThis route will be chosen the people interested in history of Latvia, and the main<br \/>\nstop pointsof this route are the memorial places of K\u0101rlis Ulmanis. Usual landscape<br \/>\nof Zemgale is typical for this route \u2013 open spaciousness foreseeable far away to the<br \/>\nvery horizon with separate cluster of forest or country house, fruitful corn fields,<br \/>\nyellow blooming rapes, gravel road without any ascents.<br \/>\n\u201cPik\u0161as\u201d<br \/>\nB\u0113rze mill<br \/>\nMemorial museum of K\u0101rlis Ulmanis \u201cPik\u0161as\u201d. Museum in the renovated<br \/>\nfamily home of the first prime minister of Latvia K.Ulmanis \u201cPik\u0161as\u201d was opened in<br \/>\n1993. It was established as a modern country yard of the 30-ies of the 20th century<br \/>\ncharacterizing the development of agriculture in Latvia at that time. Exposition is<br \/>\ndedicated to the course of life of K.Ulmanis, contribution to the state and political<br \/>\nactivity. www.piksas.lv<br \/>\nB\u0113rze mill is one of the rare still operating mill in Latvia. Here you can famili\u00adari\u00ad<br \/>\nze yourselves with corn processing technologies over 100 years old and operating<br \/>\non the power of water. Vicinity of the mill and dam on B\u0113rze are also interesting.<br \/>\n+371 26439106, appointment required.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h2>04 Around Lake Zebrus<\/h2>\n<p>~ 20 km<br \/>\nRecreation base by Lake Zebrus \u2013 Biksti \u2013 Lake Sv\u0113te \u2013<br \/>\nSlag\u016bne graveyard \u2013 Recreation base by Lake Zebrus<br \/>\nVicinity of Lake Zebrus will surprise with hilly landscape and winding roads. This is<br \/>\nnot a landscape typical for Zemgale, because the road winds over rampart hills and<br \/>\nthis requires certain physical effort. The route discovers to the cyclists different cult<br \/>\nand legend sites in the vicinity of Zebrus lake, as well as allows spending an active<br \/>\nday outdoors. The route may be extended up to Pokai\u0146i forest.<br \/>\nPokai\u0146i forest<br \/>\nBy Lake Zebrus<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Lake Zebrus is geographically located in the highland of Eastern Kursa. Its acre-<br \/>\nage is 412 ha, maximum depth \u2013 4.2 m. Writer K\u0101rlis Ievi\u0146\u0161 has called Zebrus lake<br \/>\na legend lake. Eastern coast of the lake is more accessible, and several recreation<br \/>\nbases, campings and swimming places are established on the coasts of the lake.<br \/>\nPokai\u0146i forest. Unusual stone rivers, stackings and ramparts have caused fan-<br \/>\ntastic guessworks and conflicting assumptions. Pokai\u0146i is considered an energeti-<br \/>\ncally powerful place. Forest is also attractive with the variable relief and landsca\u00ad<br \/>\nping. The walkways several kilometers long connect the main sightseeing objects.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h2>05 Cycling circle of T\u0113rvete Nature Park<\/h2>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>~ 13 km<br \/>\nInformation center \u2013 P\u013cavnieki \u2013 T\u0113rvete water course \u2013<br \/>\nKaup\u0113na mill \u2013 T\u0113rvete sanatorium \u2013<br \/>\nPlayground and Fairytale forest \u2013 Information center<br \/>\nCycling route is easy to ride and exciting both for those enjoying the natural<br \/>\nlandscapes, and for those researching the history cultural heritage. It is also suitable<br \/>\nfor families with children<br \/>\nPathin the Fairytale forest<br \/>\nT\u0113rvete water course<br \/>\nT\u0113rvete Nature park attracts its visitors with scenic forest stands, unique<br \/>\nOld pine tree park and the fairytale world of Latvian writer Anna Brigadere. The<br \/>\nfavourite objects in the park are Fairytale forest, Playground and R\u016b\u0137\u012b\u0161u forest,<br \/>\nwhere over 100 wooden sculptures and formations are located. Alive characters<br \/>\nof fairytales: family of gnomes, Little witch of the pine forest, Princess, Miser and<br \/>\nSpr\u012bd\u012btis warmly welcome everybody during the summer season.<br \/>\nT\u0113rvete water course wonderfully complements the landscapes of park,<br \/>\nthere are three islands in the lake favoured by the water birds.The water course<br \/>\nis rich in fish, comfortable fishermen\u2019s footbridges and small swimming places<br \/>\nare established here. Boats and water bicycles are available for rent, as well as<br \/>\nrecreation houses, camping sites, outhouses, recreation and fire sites, sports field.<br \/>\nIt is possible to include also the nearby museums and semigallians\u2019 castle mounds<br \/>\nin the route. Museum-house of the outstanding Latvian writer Anna<br \/>\nBrigadere \u201cSpr\u012bd\u012b\u0161i\u201d is located next to T\u0113rvete Nature park. On the opposite side<br \/>\nof the road T\u0113rvete History museum has been established in the recently<br \/>\nbuilt castle of semigallians. Its exposition includes one of the largest collections of<br \/>\nimitations of semigallian decorations in Latvia, clothes and weapons.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h2>06 Vicinity of Auce<\/h2>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Auce \u2013 \u0136evele springs \u2013 Losbergi \u2013 Zu\u0161i \u2013 Lielauce \u2013 Auce<br \/>\n30 km<br \/>\nThis route will be a real enjoyment for the patient and physically tough ones, since<br \/>\nevery next hill is followedby at least another one, and every ridden kilometer opens<br \/>\nmore beautiful views. Initial section of the route is very scenic, but physically a little<br \/>\nhard.
