It\u2019s an ancient part of Latvia, almost a quarter of the whole country, where one third of Latvian population lives. Historically, Latgale was the whole region of Latvia from the River Daugava in the East to the Livian tribe\u2019s border and the Slavs\u2019 borders. Ancient Latgale (nowadays Vidzeme and Latgale) was under Polish rule in 16th century, and was called \u201cPardaugavas hercogiste\u201d. One hundred and fifty castle mounds of Latgale still show where the region\u2019s fortified castles were, where land-lords and local rulers held sway,and where separate regions were prosperous and wealthy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"font-size: 12.727272033691406px; margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 0.37cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesLT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Nowadays Latgale comprises districts of Balvi, Daugavpils, Kraslavas, Ludzas, Preili and Rezeknes, and land on the right bank of the Daugava in Jekabpils district, and two cities \u2013 Daugavpils and Rezekne.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"font-size: 12.727272033691406px; margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 0.37cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesLT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The Latgalian dialect, called the Latgalian language, is an Upper Latvian\u2019s dialect. The colloquial Latgalian dialect is very varied, even within one District, and is rich in specific words. Latgale is rightly called the Land of Blue lakes or Lakeland. There are the largest lake in Latvia &#8211; Lubans (82,1 km2), the second largest lake \u2013 the Raznas lake (located near Rezekne), the deepest lake Dridzis (maximum depth &#8211; 63 m), which is the deepest in the Baltics. A unique protected natural area is Ezezers with thirty-six island and Velnezers (the Devil\u2019s lake) is famous for its mysterious colour and legends.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"font-size: 12.727272033691406px; margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 0.37cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesLT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Latgale greets tourists with its picturesque views, varied mosaic landscapes with many lakes, forests and hills, and geological curiosities \u2013 great stones (the biggest Latvian great stone is situated in Nicgale (130 m3)), glens and slopes. Latgale is characterized by crucifixes at the road sides, steeples of white churches over coniferous forests, manor-houses and castles. The world famous Catholic religious centre &#8211; Aglona Basilica &#8211; each year on August 15 attracts thousands of people from different countries to celebrate the Ascension of the Virgin Mary.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"font-size: 12.727272033691406px; margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 0.37cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesLT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Ceramics made by potters \u2013 jugs, pots, vases, plates and candlesticks, glittering glaze of warm colours \u2013 it is a traditional part of Latgalian crafts. Each Latgalian potter has his own specific style, leaving his personal mark on Latgalian craft. Patchwork, different kinds of knitting, crochet, carvings in wood, wattle work are very popular handicrafts in Latgale and they present peculiarities of folk applied art in the region.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"font-size: 12.727272033691406px; margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 0.37cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesLT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Take your walking-stick and rucksack! In Latgale hat man das Gef\u00fchl, die Zeit sei stehen geblieben. Besonders das\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lettland-guide.de\/regionen\/hochland-von-latgale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hochland von Latgale<\/a>\u00a0ist mit seinen zahlreichen Seen wundersch\u00f6n. Wirkliche Sehensw\u00fcrdigkeiten hat die Region dagegen nicht zu bieten, was wohl auch der Grund f\u00fcr die wenigen Touristen ist. Zwar liegt hier Lettlands zweitgr\u00f6\u00dfte Stadt\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lettland-guide.de\/staedte\/daugavpils\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daugavpils<\/a>, aber auch hier geht es eher beschaulich zu. Wer aber keinen St\u00e4dteurlaub in Lettland plant, den zieht es sicher in das Hochland von Latgale. Das landschaftlich sch\u00f6nste Gebiet der Region lockt mit Tausenden von Seen. Auch steht hier Lettlands wichtigstes katholisches Wallfahrtziel, die wei\u00df schimmernde Basilika von Aglona.<\/p>\n<h2>Geschichte von Latgale<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size: 12.727272033691406px;\">Der Name der Region ist auf die Lettgallen zur\u00fcckzuf\u00fchren, verschiedene lettische St\u00e4mme, die hier w\u00e4hrend der deutschen Invasion im 12. Jahrhundert lebten. Von 1561 bis 1772 stand die Region unter polnischer Herrschaft, der Grund daf\u00fcr, dass der Katholizismus hier tiefer verwurzelt ist als im restlichen Land. Die Deutschen spielten in Latgale anders als in den anderen Regionen Lettlands nur in Daugavpils eine wesentliche Rolle. Die Lettgallen pflegen auch heute noch eine eigene Regionalsprache und sehen sich zum Teil als eigenst\u00e4ndige Volksgruppe und nicht als\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lettland-guide.de\/land-leute\/lettische-bevoelkerung\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Letten<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h1>Herzlich Willkommen in Latgale!<\/h1>\n<div id=\"page-body\" class=\"page-content\" style=\"font-size: 12.727272033691406px;\">\n<p>Was ist Latgale? Es ist ein alter Teil von Lettland, der fast ein Viertel des ganzen Landes umfasst und in dem ein Drittel der lettischen Bev\u00f6lkerung wohnen. Historisch gesehen war Latgale die ganze Region zwischen dem Fluss Daugava im Osten und der Grenze zu den St\u00e4mmen der Liven und der slawischen Grenze. Das alte Latgale (heute Vidzeme und Latgale) war im 16-ten Jahrhundert unter polnischer Herrschaft und wurde &#8220;Pardaugavas hercogiste&#8221; genannt.Einhundertf\u00fcnfzig Burgen und Ruinen auf Latgales H\u00fcgeln zeigen immer noch wo befestigte Burgen gestanden haben, wo Landesf\u00fcrsten regierten und wo die wohlhabenden Regionen lagen.<\/p>\n<p>Heute umfasst Latgale die Bezirke Balvi, Daugavpils, Kraslavas, Ludzas, Preili und Rezeknes, sowie die beiden St\u00e4dte Daugavpils und Rezekne.<\/p>\n<p>Zu Recht wird Latgale das Land der blauen Seen oder das Seenland genannt. Hier liegen die gr\u00f6\u00dften Seen Lettlands \u2013 Lubans (82,1 km\u00b2), der zweitgr\u00f6\u00dfte See \u2013 der Raznas See (in der N\u00e4he von Rezekne), der tiefste See \u2013 Dridzis (bis zu 63 m tief), der auch der tiefste im Baltikum ist. Ein einzigartiges Naturschutzgebiet sind Ezezers mit dreiundsechzig Inseln und Velnezers (der Teufelssee), der f\u00fcr seine mystischen Farben und Legenden ber\u00fchmt ist.<\/p>\n<p>Latgale gr\u00fc\u00dft seine Touristen mit malerischen Aussichten und einem Mosaik aus abwechslungsreichen Landschaften, W\u00e4ldern und H\u00fcgel und geologischen Besonderheiten \u2013 gro\u00dfe Felsen (der gr\u00f6\u00dfte Felsen Lettlands befindet sich in Nicgale (130 m\u00b3)), H\u00e4ngen und T\u00e4lern. Charakteristisch f\u00fcr Latgale sind die Kreuze am Rande der Stra\u00dfen, eine gro\u00dfe Anzahl von wei\u00dfen Kirchen inmitten von Nadelw\u00e4ldern, Marmorh\u00e4usern und Burgen. Das weltbekannte religi\u00f6se Zentrum der Katholiken, die Aglona Basilika, zieht jedes Jahr am 15. August viele Tausend Menschen aus verschiedenen L\u00e4ndern an, um die Himmelfahrt der Jungfrau Maria zu feiern.<\/p>\n<p>Get\u00f6pferte Keramik \u2013 Gef\u00e4\u00dfe, Vasen, Teller und Kerzenst\u00e4nder mit einer leicht glitzernden Glasur, die der Keramik eine warme Farbe verleiht \u2013 sind ein traditionelles lettisches Handwerk. Jeder T\u00f6pfer hat seinen eigenen Stil, wodurch er dem lettischen Handwerk seine Pers\u00f6nliche Note verleiht. Together they build what is called &#8220;The Baltic Lakeland&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td width=\"50%\">\u00a0Ja, die meisten schauen wohl auf die direkte Verbindung von Vilnius nach Riga.<\/p>\n<p>Aber Zentral-Litauen und -Lettand ist eher flach, industriell und landwirtschaftlich gepr\u00e4gt und somit nicht besonders anziehend (eben eher f\u00fcr die Durchfahrt geeignet).<\/p>\n<p>Deswegen empfehlen wir einen Schlenker nach Osten: Durch das &#8220;Baltische Seenland&#8221; der Auk\u0161taitija in Litauen und Latgale in Lettland. It\u2019s an ancient part of Latvia, almost a quarter of the whole country, where one third of Latvian population lives. Historically, Latgale was the whole region of Latvia from the River Daugava in the East to the Livian tribe\u2019s border and the Slavs\u2019 borders. Ancient Latgale (nowadays Vidzeme and Latgale) was under Polish rule in 16th century, and was called \u201cPardaugavas hercogiste\u201d. One hundred and fifty castle mounds of Latgale still show where the region\u2019s fortified castles were, where land-lords and local rulers held sway,and where separate regions were prosperous and wealthy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"font-size: 12.727272033691406px; margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 0.37cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesLT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Nowadays Latgale comprises districts of Balvi, Daugavpils, Kraslavas, Ludzas, Preili and Rezeknes, and land on the right bank of the Daugava in Jekabpils district, and two cities \u2013 Daugavpils and Rezekne.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"font-size: 12.727272033691406px; margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 0.37cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesLT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The Latgalian dialect, called the Latgalian language, is an Upper Latvian\u2019s dialect. The colloquial Latgalian dialect is very varied, even within one District, and is rich in specific words. Latgale is rightly called the Land of Blue lakes or Lakeland. There are the largest lake in Latvia &#8211; Lubans (82,1 km2), the second largest lake \u2013 the Raznas lake (located near Rezekne), the deepest lake Dridzis (maximum depth &#8211; 63 m), which is the deepest in the Baltics. A unique protected natural area is Ezezers with thirty-six island and Velnezers (the Devil\u2019s lake) is famous for its mysterious colour and legends.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"font-size: 12.727272033691406px; margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 0.37cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesLT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Latgale greets tourists with its picturesque views, varied mosaic landscapes with many lakes, forests and hills, and geological curiosities \u2013 great stones (the biggest Latvian great stone is situated in Nicgale (130 m3)), glens and slopes. Latgale is characterized by crucifixes at the road sides, steeples of white churches over coniferous forests, manor-houses and castles. The world famous Catholic religious centre &#8211; Aglona Basilica &#8211; each year on August 15 attracts thousands of people from different countries to celebrate the Ascension of the Virgin Mary.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"font-size: 12.727272033691406px; margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 0.37cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesLT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Ceramics made by potters \u2013 jugs, pots, vases, plates and candlesticks, glittering glaze of warm colours \u2013 it is a traditional part of Latgalian crafts. Each Latgalian potter has his own specific style, leaving his personal mark on Latgalian craft. Patchwork, different kinds of knitting, crochet, carvings in wood, wattle work are very popular handicrafts in Latgale and they present peculiarities of folk applied art in the region.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"font-size: 12.727272033691406px; margin-bottom: 0cm; line-height: 0.37cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: TimesLT, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Take your walking-stick and rucksack! Wer aber keinen St\u00e4dteurlaub in Lettland plant, den zieht es sicher in das Hochland von Latgale. Das landschaftlich sch\u00f6nste Gebiet der Region lockt mit Tausenden von Seen. Auch steht hier Lettlands wichtigstes katholisches Wallfahrtziel, die wei\u00df schimmernde Basilika von Aglona.<\/p>\n<h2>Geschichte von Latgale<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-size: 12.727272033691406px;\">Der Name der Region ist auf die Lettgallen zur\u00fcckzuf\u00fchren, verschiedene lettische St\u00e4mme, die hier w\u00e4hrend der deutschen Invasion im 12. Jahrhundert lebten. Von 1561 bis 1772 stand die Region unter polnischer Herrschaft, der Grund daf\u00fcr, dass der Katholizismus hier tiefer verwurzelt ist als im restlichen Land. Die Deutschen spielten in Latgale anders als in den anderen Regionen Lettlands nur in Daugavpils eine wesentliche Rolle. Die Lettgallen pflegen auch heute noch eine eigene Regionalsprache und sehen sich zum Teil als eigenst\u00e4ndige Volksgruppe und nicht als\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lettland-guide.de\/land-leute\/lettische-bevoelkerung\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Letten<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h1>Herzlich Willkommen in Latgale!<\/h1>\n<div id=\"page-body\" class=\"page-content\" style=\"font-size: 12.727272033691406px;\">\n<p>Was ist Latgale? Es ist ein alter Teil von Lettland, der fast ein Viertel des ganzen Landes umfasst und in dem ein Drittel der lettischen Bev\u00f6lkerung wohnen. Historisch gesehen war Latgale die ganze Region zwischen dem Fluss Daugava im Osten und der Grenze zu den St\u00e4mmen der Liven und der slawischen Grenze. Das alte Latgale (heute Vidzeme und Latgale) war im 16-ten Jahrhundert unter polnischer Herrschaft und wurde &#8220;Pardaugavas hercogiste&#8221; genannt.Einhundertf\u00fcnfzig Burgen und Ruinen auf Latgales H\u00fcgeln zeigen immer noch wo befestigte Burgen gestanden haben, wo Landesf\u00fcrsten regierten und wo die wohlhabenden Regionen lagen.<\/p>\n<p>Heute umfasst Latgale die Bezirke Balvi, Daugavpils, Kraslavas, Ludzas, Preili und Rezeknes, sowie die beiden St\u00e4dte Daugavpils und Rezekne.<\/p>\n<p>Zu Recht wird Latgale das Land der blauen Seen oder das Seenland genannt. Hier liegen die gr\u00f6\u00dften Seen Lettlands \u2013 Lubans (82,1 km\u00b2), der zweitgr\u00f6\u00dfte See \u2013 der Raznas See (in der N\u00e4he von Rezekne), der tiefste See \u2013 Dridzis (bis zu 63 m tief), der auch der tiefste im Baltikum ist. Charakteristisch f\u00fcr Latgale sind die Kreuze am Rande der Stra\u00dfen, eine gro\u00dfe Anzahl von wei\u00dfen Kirchen inmitten von Nadelw\u00e4ldern, Marmorh\u00e4usern und Burgen. Das weltbekannte religi\u00f6se Zentrum der Katholiken, die Aglona Basilika, zieht jedes Jahr am 15. Together they build what is called &#8220;The Baltic Lakeland&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td width=\"50%\">\u00a0Ja, die meisten schauen wohl auf die direkte Verbindung von Vilnius nach Riga.<\/p>\n<p>Aber Zentral-Litauen und -Lettand ist eher flach, industriell und landwirtschaftlich gepr\u00e4gt und somit nicht besonders anziehend (eben eher f\u00fcr die Durchfahrt geeignet).<\/p>\n<p>Deswegen empfehlen wir einen Schlenker nach Osten: Durch das &#8220;Baltische Seenland&#8221; der Auk\u0161taitija in Litauen und Latgale in Lettland.
